How to measure social skills Form: What You Should Know

Methods The current study used four instruments used to assess social skills: Scale for Measuring Social Skills for Kindergarteners in the United States (MS DSS) from the Child Research Center (NHS) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. This scale assesses six major skills and requires about 15 minutes to complete. It has been shown to assess social and emotional skills related to cognitive functions and problem behaviors, and is most commonly used with students in kindergarten through ninth grade. The Child Behavior Checklist from the U.S. Bureau of the Census. This is a reliable measure of six social skills and requires about 20 to 25 minutes to complete. It is most commonly used with middle and high school students. The T-Sensory Scale from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SS HRC). This scale is also a reliable measure of six different social skills and requires about 25 to 30 minutes to complete. It is most commonly used with undergraduates and first-year students. What was studied? We examined the relationship between SS and both social and emotional skills in the context of school and community life, specifically in middle and high school. What are the key findings? The relationships between SS and social and emotional skills measured using the SSRS and T-Sensory Scale were stable across age and gender. The relationships with social skills were generally more stable than those for emotional skills. The relationship between social and emotional skills increased with age; in general, these relationships increased more overtime for SS than for those for emotional competences. How are the relationships between SS and social and emotional skills measured using the SSRS and T-Sensory Scale different from those that were measured using the Social Skills Inventory (SSI)? The SSI used a scale ranging from 1 to 10, whereas the SSRS and T-Sensory Scale used a scale ranging from 1 to 15. Hence, the SSI had higher reliability and lower inter-rater reliability than the SSRS and T-Sensory Scale. However, the effect sizes of the SSI versus the SSRS and T-Sensory Scale were not that different. This result was due to the fact that there was no evidence to suggest that the effects of the SSI on social and emotional skills were different from those of the SSRS or T-Sensory Scale over time.
