Now, based on my own experience as a parent and with the many parents I've worked with over the years as a teacher, there is a tendency among first-time parents or with firstborn children to start first grade as soon as possible. It's seen as a big milestone, and, and, and parents (including myself) are guilty of wanting to push their child ahead to the next thing. However, if your child has a summer birthday and is maybe on the cusp of the first-grade cutoff for your school, I am here today to urge you to think carefully about whether it's time for your child to move on or whether an extra year of kindergarten would benefit them. I am strongly in favor of giving those children with summer birthdays the extra time to play. Those magical early childhood years are full of play, and play is so important to a child's development and to human beings' development. So, I often say to parents, "What's the rush?" You can either give them an extra year to play or just start them in school a year early so they can graduate from college a year early and enter the workforce a year early. Is the point that they get an extra year of working life under their belt before they die? That's an extreme way of looking at it, but that extra year of kindergarten can be such a gift.
