Like most 25 year olds, Joey Juarez likes to look his best when going out with friends. However, because he has autism, social situations can be awkward, so he often avoids them. He used to feel lonely, but that changed when he attended a 16-week course at the UCLA Simul Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. This course is specifically designed for students with autism and aims to teach them how to interact in social situations, including dating. Many adults on the autism spectrum really want to have friends and romantic relationships, but they struggle with the know-how. The course, developed at UCLA, is unique in that it has clinical research to support its effectiveness. In a recent study, researchers monitored the progress of students in the program and found significant improvements in their social skills. Not only did they observe an overall improvement, but there were notable enhancements in cooperation and assertion. Additionally, participants reported a decrease in autism symptoms. The program, known as PEERS, also provides guidance to parents on how to coach their young adult children in social situations. To further support social interactions, researchers have also created a book and an app with practical tips that can benefit anyone. As Joey's parent, I continue to be his coach using the knowledge gained from the course. It has made my life as a parent much easier. Joey now enjoys attending parties and feels more confident than ever before. He has learned how to make and keep friends, thanks to the comprehensive instruction provided at the UCLA Simul Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.
